Big trees

Bridge and I made a road trip a few weeks ago to Sequoia National Forest. Click on the image to go to a photo album with a bunch of pictures of huge ass trees.

This was my second time to Sequoia. My first visit was during a family vacation when I was 14-years old or so. I remember that there was this massive tree that had fallen something like 800 years ago and the park officials let people carve there name into it. I carved my initials on that trip and on this recent trip I searched and searched but alas did not find my initials from 19 years ago.

New Photos

I posted a new gallery called Los Angeles in my online photo album. That will be a catch-all gallery for images of LA and the strange things that happen here.

New Online Photo Album

I've decided to start keeping an online photo album over here. I've got more pictures from my birthday when I went flying over LA in a smalle Cessna 172. The site also has an RSS feed so you can add it to whatever news aggregator that you're using. I'll be posting more photos soon.

'Cavite' at the Nuart in LA

Cavite, the phenomenally low budget thriller from Neill Dela Llana and Ian Gamazon, opened at the Nuart theater this past week in LA. I saw the film on DVD back when Janet and John Pierson first decided to rep it. Actually I think John's class at UT officially repped it (which is just so damn cool it makes me want to go back to film school). I urge everyone out there to see this film. It's the perfect execution of a movie that cost the price of two plane tickets to the Phillipines. Congratulations Neill and Ian!

Last month I turned 32 years old (yipes!). Bridge gave me what will have to go down as one of the best birthday gifts ever -- an hour and a half flying lesson. I don't know how many of you know this about me but I have a private pilots license, got it when I was 18. I started flying when I was 14 but I had to sort of give it up when I was 22 because paying the bills out in the real world doesn't leave a whole lot of disposable income to go out renting airplanes with. I've taken flights here and there over the years, and I can always get back into it once I make my millions (ha!), but I always need to fly with an instructor because I can't afford to stay proficient.

So anyway, we went up with an instructor named Jan who is from Poland. It was amazing! Here are some pics from that flight:

Here's the Cessna 172 that we rented -- it's a four-seater plane.

Banking right over Beverly Hills.

We flew directly over LAX!

Me in the pilot's seat.

Bridge in the back.

Landing is the greatest, most exciting, and most challenging part of the flying. It really tests you.

That night we ate sushi at Yamashiro. Perfect.

I am a Caveman

I was driving out to my parents house in Fredricksburg on Friday when I realized that Homo Erectus (aka The Adan Rifkin Caveman Comedy Project Film Movie Project) was shooting out in the hill country. Turns out they were shooting at Pedernales State Park which is on the way to Fredricksburg. So I thought I'd stop in and say hi and wish them luck. As I made my way down to the falls that are the main attraction at Pedernales, I saw a gangly group of cavemen gathered round Carolyn Pfeifer. Naturally, one of them was a caveman by the name of Ron Jeremy.

I was standing there talking with Carolyn for all of 30 seconds before Adam pointed at me very authoritatively and said, "You need to be in the film! You are a caveman!" I put up a short-lived resistence but inevitably succumbed to such a prehistoric tone of voice. So I headed back up to the trailers in the parking area where I was immediately given a fur pelt and a pair of "uggs" (??? -- fur boots basically). As I was waiting to go back down to the set one of the trailer doors flew open. Standing in the doorway was David Carradine pointing at me. He said, "You look like a woman!" I had to agree. I introduced myself and then told him that only a few days earlier I had seen The Serpents Egg by Ingmar Bergman. He immediately launched into a story about how crazy Bergman was. Apparently Bergman was very upset with Carradine throughout the shoot because Carradine was partying too much at night -- Bergman wanted him to be more depressed in the film. He also told me that Bergman had no qualms about killing animals in his movies... something I'd noticed in The Passion of Anna.

So down on set I was to join a gang of 5 other caveman extras who were led by Carradine, playing the Caveman-In-Charge (CIC). The scene called for us to chase Adam Rifkin who was dressed as a wooly mamoth. Our motivation was that we were hungry cavemen. Easy enough. We chased that man about 12 times and all throughout I did my best to standout as the most nuanced caveman performer. I really really gave it my best, I felt prehistoric, I searched into my inner reptilian mind. I walked with a hunch and carried my spear as any barbarian in his right mind would, high above the head with a back and forth motion intended to inspire great fear in the enemy, or the food, or what have you. I made the most of my role and hopefully you will see me on the big screen standing right behind Mr. Carradine.

TCK Wrap Party Pics

Here are some pictures from the wrap party we had a few weeks ago. Everyone had a great time dancing on the ceiling.

Brian, Bryan, Dana Frank, Seth, and Kadeem. Before the party we went out to see the bats on Congress.

Even the kids came out to the club. This was little Orlando's first time in a club and he was clearly ecstatic about that.

Brian McGuire (Norman) and Gabriel Folse (Grant Vanderpool). Both were in a short film that we made years ago called Jesus of Judson, playing father and son.

Cinematographer PJ Raval, always styling.

Gary Chason dropped in to offer Rusty some beer.

Young Rebecca, aka Tiger Darrow.
